Recently we designed and installed a high energy efficient system for a new build eco- home in Cannes. The property has a combined heating and cooling solution which reduces energy costs by around 40%, a significant saving. It is the first time that we have seen such a system in France so we thought that we would explain how it works and its benefits.
Keeping a property cool during hot weather is usually achieved with an air conditioning system, however in this case we decided upon an entirely different solution: a compression cooling system, similar to technology used in refrigerators. It works by cooling the air supplied to all the habitable rooms.
The comfort cooling system works in combination with a heat recovery ventilation unit – often called an MVHR. This ensures that a constant supply of fresh filtered air flows into the property. The cooling system will operate automatically when the indoor temperature is higher than the pre-set internal comfort temperature and conversely the heating system will take over if the temperature falls below this.
Our team installed all the drainage, plumbing and four bathrooms in the eco-friendly villa that is 300 square metres in size. Most 300 square metre villas have at least 24 KW heat pumps, this system is only 14KW and runs the complete house heating and cooling.
There are other benefits, too. The system we installed is compact, unobtrusive and very quiet. In the photographs below you can see some examples of the equipment that we fitted.
